ETSI’s Software Development Group OpenCAPIF (SDG OCF) is developing a Common API Framework as defined by 3GPP, allowing Network Functions and Applications to expose and consume API in a secure and consistent way.

Key areas of work

API exposure

OpenCAPIF offers a standardised API management framework ensuring interoperability, security, and discoverability of network APIs. As a cornerstone for multi-vendor 5G, 6G and future networks, OpenCAPIF allows secure exposure of core network APIs to third parties, enabling consistent API exposure and consumption.

Developer experience

SDG OpenCAPIF is developing CAPIF APIs, core functionality, test cases, and a Software Development Kit (SDK) facilitating the development of CAPIF compliant API Providers and Invokers. The SDK allows any third party to integrate API management capabilities into their solutions and benefit from the OpenCAPIF discoverability and security features. Developer experience is further enhanced by a public OpenCAPIF sandbox hosted at ETSI that allows for easy experimentation with OpenCAPIF.

Collaboration & ecosystem

SDG OpenCAPIF is actively contributing feedback to 3GPP TSG WG6 (SA6) and collaborating with ETSI SDGs OpenSlice and OpenOP. SDG OpenCAPIF benefits from a wide research and innovation ecosystem, leveraging the code and contributing feedback from innovative use cases.

  • How we work

SDG OpenCAPIF delivers two major code releases per year, in January and July, followed by plenary meetings and optionally Hackfests. During release cycles, the community meets weekly online to synchronise progress and priorities.
