TC BRAN

Current and future Wireless Access Systems (WAS) including Radio Local Area Network (RLAN) technologies operating in different license-exempt bands.

ETSI’s Technical Committee on Broadband Radio Access Networks (TC BRAN) is responsible for the standardisation of broadband and narrow band radio access systems, with a particular focus on Wireless Access Systems including Radio Local Area Networks (WAS/RLAN).

The committee develops standards that enable efficient and harmonised use of spectrum, especially in licence-exempt and shared bands. TC BRAN’s work helps support compliance with regulatory requirements, provides information for spectrum regulation from a European perspective, simplifies market access for product manufacturers, supports the coexistence of dissimilar radio services, and addresses future radio communication topics.

Key areas of work

Harmonised Standards for WAS/RLAN

Development and maintenance of Harmonised Standards under the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) for WAS/RLAN. This includes development of operating requirements that address regulatory rules such as for spectrum access, emission limits and other essential requirements.

Spectrum sharing and coexistence

Technical studies and specifications addressing coexistence between broadband systems and incumbent services (such as radar, road tolling, satellite and meteorological systems). This work supports efficient and fair use of shared and licence-exempt spectrum.

Wideband data transmission systems

Standardisation of wideband data transmission systems, including fixed and mobile equipment operating in high-frequency bands. This enables multi-gigabit wireless connectivity and short-range high-capacity links.

Conformance and test specifications

Development of conformance test specifications to support compliance assessment, market access and surveillance.

  • What we do

TC BRAN produces Harmonised Standards, Technical Specifications and Technical Reports for broadband radio access networks. The committee contributes to European regulatory frameworks, supports spectrum management, and collaborates with other ETSI technical bodies, the European Communications Commission (ECC), the European Union, and external standardisation organisations.
