TC MTS

Improving the efficiency of standard test descriptions as well as associated conformance and interoperability testing processes.

ETSI’s Technical Committee on Methods for Testing and Specification (TC MTS) develops globally applicable methodologies, languages, and frameworks for testing ICT systems. Its work provides the foundations for high-quality standards, trusted conformance processes, and rigorous system validation. TC MTS ensures that testing technologies evolve in step with modern ICT innovations, from traditional networking to next-generation AI-enabled systems. Through its work, TC MTS enables reliable, interoperable, and trustworthy ICT deployments across industries.

Key areas of work

TTCN-3 – the international test language

TC MTS maintains and evolves TTCN-3, a domain-independent, platform-agnostic language for specifying, executing, and analysing tests. TTCN-3 supports a wide range of testing needs, including conformance, interoperability, real-time, performance, security, and regression testing.

Test Description Language (TDL)

TC MTS develops and enhances TDL, a high-level notation that captures test intent and bridges the gap between declarative test design and executable test specifications. TDL simplifies test development and improves the consistency and reuse of test logic.

AI testing, auditing, and documentation

The committee defines methodologies and specifications to test and audit AI-enabled systems, addressing transparency, quality, and trustworthiness. Its work includes standards for AI testing techniques, continuous compliance auditing, and structured technical documentation.

Testing Support for ICT Technologies (TST)

TC MTS provides testing methodologies, studies, guidelines, and catalogues for ICT domains not covered by other ETSI technical bodies. This work supports conformance, interoperability, security, and performance testing across emerging and evolving technologies.

  • What we do

TC MTS creates, maintains, and promotes standardised testing methodologies and technologies used across the global ICT ecosystem. The committee develops languages such as TTCN-3 and TDL, produces testing guidelines and catalogues, and supports the creation of conformance and interoperability test suites.

In addition, TC MTS drives innovation in testing for modern technologies—including AI, distributed systems, and next-generation networks—ensuring that ETSI standards are supported by robust, reliable validation and assessment methods. Through collaboration with other ETSI bodies and the wider testing community, TC MTS advances best practices and promotes consistent, high-quality testing across industries.
