Sophia Antipolis, France, 9 December 2025

The kick-off meeting of the Quantum Technologies Technical Committee (TC QT), held last week at ETSI’s headquarters in Sophia-Antipolis marked a major milestone in quantum standards development. The event attracted over 90 participants from Europe, Canada, Singapore, Japan and other countries.

This intensive day of discussions set the pace for future meetings, laid the foundation of the committee’s activities, and included the election of a dynamic, expert, and well-connected leadership team. Mark Pecen from EigenQ Europe was elected as Chair of TC QT. Axel Ferrazzini (GovStrat), Federico Grasselli (Leonardo), Martin Ward (Toshiba), and Momtchil Peev (Huawei) were elected as Vice Chairs.

“I’m enthusiastic to chair the very first meetings of ETSI TC Quantum Tech” says Mark Pecen. “This group will be instrumental in advancing standardised quantum technologies, particularly in the domain of product development. ETSI is not only committed to Europe’s future in quantum technology but is also contributing to a sustainable future globally.”

The committee agreed to host future meetings alongside other ETSI quantum-focused groups, such as Quantum Safe Cryptography and Quantum Key Distribution to ensure convergence and maximize participation from quantum experts.

The first work item will be a Technical Report mapping the broader quantum ecosystem and identifying opportunities for cooperation. In parallel, the development of a Quantum Technologies Radar will provide a simple, visually attractive and regularly updated overview of emerging quantum technologies – including quantum computing, quantum communications, quantum sensors, and more – assessing their relevance and maturity.

Additionally, a Technical Report on Implementation Guidelines for Quantum Random Number Generators is already in the approval process. This report will offer a comprehensive guide to practical implementation aspects of quantum random number generators, aimed at both implementer and user of such devices.
