Advancing knowledge in ICT standardisation

Building the next generation of ICT standardisation experts

Technologies such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and data protection are evolving at speed—and they are shaping the world you will live and work in. Standardisation sits at the heart of this transformation, ensuring technologies work together, remain trustworthy and drive European innovation.

ETSI is helping the next generation turn curiosity into real impact. Through engaging education and training, we equip future professionals with the skills to shape how technologies are designed, developed and used—across industry, public administration, research and academia.

By contributing to the European Commission’s Standardisation Strategy, ETSI supports Europe’s digital, green and industrial ambitions—and opens the door for new voices to play a part in that journey.

Education builds expertise. Expertise builds leadership. ETSI is committed to both, and your ideas can help shape what comes next.

Testimonials

Nizar AbdelkafiDr. Nizar Abdelkafi, Professor, Department of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering, Politecnico di Milano

In the context of rapid technological change and increasing global competition, it is essential that students understand the strategic role of standardisation in shaping innovation, market access, and interoperability. Integrating these perspectives into engineering and management education is therefore a key element in preparing the next generation of professionals.

As a co-author of the ETSI textbook “Understanding ICT Standardisation”, I have witnessed the significant value of ETSI’s educational materials in practice. The textbook and its supporting resources provide a clear, well-structured introduction to both the foundations and the real-world applications of standardisation. Their modular design enables straightforward integration into a wide range of courses, from supply chain management and innovation studies to engineering and technology management.

In my teaching at Politecnico di Milano, these materials are complemented by interactive approaches such as serious games and inquiry-driven discussions, enabling students to engage actively with topics including standard-setting, interoperability, and the strategic use of standards. This combination supports not only knowledge acquisition but also the development of a deeper, more application-oriented understanding.

Overall, ETSI’s educational resources are an invaluable asset for both students and educators. They lower the barriers to integrating standardisation into academic curricula and help develop a new generation of professionals equipped to engage effectively with standardisation and to support Europe’s innovation ecosystem.

Jean-philippe HumbertDr. Jean-Philippe Humbert, Deputy Director at ILNAS

Actively involved in the development of education about standardisation since 2010, ILNAS, Luxembourg’s National Standards Body, welcomes the establishment of a strong and productive collaboration with ETSI in this field. This partnership was first implemented through a university certificate program (2015–2019) and has continued within the Master in Technopreneurship (MTECH) program since 2021, both diplomas organised in collaboration with the University of Luxembourg.

The MTECH Master’s program aims to strengthen the competencies of both young graduates and professionals in the field of standardisation, particularly in information and communication technologies, while simultaneously fostering an entrepreneurial mindset. In this context, ETSI’s active involvement in the programme, together with the education material it developed – including the textbook “Understanding ICT Standardisation” and its related supporting materials – represent a key resource for teaching standardisation and enabling students to gain a deeper understanding of its strategic importance and real-world implications.

Olia KanevskaiaDr. Olia Kanevskaia Whitaker, Assistant Professor at Utrecht University – Department International and European Law

Given today’s rapid technological advancements and the evolving geopolitical landscape, there is a need to revisit the balance between regulation and innovation. Therefore, it is vital for students to understand the pivotal role standardisation plays in shaping technology regulation.

Collaborating with ETSI has provided the Utrecht Summer Law on Global Power and Technology with a valuable, practical dimension, allowing students to translate theoretical concepts into real-world applications. The insightful guest lecture by Mr Alex Leadbeater (ETSI Fellow and chair of TC Cyber) sparked numerous engaging discussions that expanded students’ perspectives on the intersection of cybersecurity and global regulation, the relationship between national and international frameworks, and the European view on cybersecurity standardisation. ETSI’s educational materials, with their clear explanations and illustrative examples, are an invaluable resource for both students and educators. They offer a straightforward understanding of complex topics, while also enabling teachers to seamlessly integrate them into their course material. Moreover, the licenses for the material are available free of charge, making this material highly accessible and ready to use for all students and academic institutions.

Collaboration between academia and industry is crucial in educating future experts in standardisation. With real-world use cases, dynamic discussions, and high-quality study materials, students gain a comprehensive understanding of relevant institutions, regulations, and how these concepts are applied in practice. This exposure not only broadens their horizons and enhances their career prospects but also prepares them to become more skilled and effective standardisation practitioners.
