Back for a sixth year, TelecomTV’s Cloud Native Telco Summit examines how communications service providers are adopting new methodologies, practices and tools to underpin their increasingly cloud-oriented strategies. This year’s expanded summit covers all stages of the cloud-native journey.

We start with the basics, looking at what cloud native is and what it is not – often a source of confusion within the industry. We also provide an introduction to DevOps and explain its function with telco software teams. Day two moves on to look at specific roles within a cloud-native organisation and considers the skills requirements. Whilst last year we looked at platform engineering, this year we turn our focus to FinOps and DevSecOps, which deal with cost management and security within a cloud-native team. Day three wraps up the summit with a debate on the progress of cloud native and its impact on telcos. We discover how the leading cloud-native telcos are benefitting from this cultural change and look ahead to new cloud-native developments and advances.

ETSI is pleased to support the event.Join the event to hear:

Francisco-Javier Ramón Salguero, Telefónica, Chair of ETSI Open-Source MANO (OSM), who will join the experts in the Deep Dive Session: Containerised Applications and CNF Workloads, on day three: Thursday 19 September 2024

In this final Deep Dive of this year’s summit, the experts examine the rate of migrating from virtual network functions (VNFs) to cloud-native network functions (CNFs) within the industry. They discuss the implications of this shift and explore key telco use cases that are now fully supported by CNFs, shedding light on the areas where further advancements and enhancements are still required to optimise performance and functionality. They also explore the strategic advantages and operational efficiencies that Kubernetes brings to the table when deploying CNFs, providing a deeper understanding of the tangible benefits experienced by telcos using this technology. The session examines the critical role of optimisation software for diverse multi-cloud environments, and looks at the need to align with stringent 3GPP and industry standards to ensure seamless interoperability and compliance. Diego R. Lopez, Telefónica, Chair of ETSI ZSM ISG, NOC of ETSI ISG NFV in the Panel: Identifying new roles and developing key skills, on day two: Wednesday 18 September 2024

What strategies are telcos employing to acquire the essential skills needed for a successful transition to cloud-native operations and networks? How are telcos adapting to the demands of cloud native and what initiatives are they implementing to equip their workforce with the necessary skills for a cloud-native environment? The panel also highlights the roles of FinOps and DevSecOps in the context of cloud-native telco operations. Dr. Joan Triay, DOCOMO Communications Lab. Europe (DOCOMO Euro-Labs),  ETSI ISG NFV Rapporteur in the Panel: The essential components of a cloud-native strategy, on Day one: Tuesday 17 September 2024

This panel explores the ongoing confusion surrounding cloud native, emphasising the necessity for a precise and universally understood definition within the telecoms industry. It delves into the benefits and challenges of adopting a cloud-native approach, and offers valuable insights and strategies for organisations to effectively navigate this transformative shift. The panel also highlights the intricacies of developing and nurturing a successful cloud-native environment, highlighting the importance of robust infrastructure and operational practices.

Event type: Interoperability Events

ETSI, in partnership with the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) and co-funded by the European Commission (EC), and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), organized the 4th C-V2X PlugtestsTM. This Plugtests was hosted by DEKRA in Malaga, Spain, from 10 to 13 September 2024.

What were the objectives and scope of the 4th C-V2X PLUGTESTS event?

C-V2X (Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything) is an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) service using mobile communication technology for direct communication as well as network communication between vehicles, from vehicle to pedestrian and from vehicle to infrastructure.

The 4th C-V2X PLUGTESTS event enabled On-Board-Units (OBUs), Roadside-Units (RSUs) and Public key infrastructure (PKIs) vendors to run interoperability test sessions to assess the level of interoperability of their implementation and validate the understanding of the standards. The goal of interoperability testing was to check that implementations of devices with different form factors can work together and provide the functionalities specified in the standards.

This edition of the Plugtests event focused on testing direct communication between devices using ETSI TC ITS Release 2 standards, including Collective Perception Services (CPS), and Vulnerable Road Users (VRU). The event did also explore the integration of ITS services over 5G NR Sidelink and the critical aspect of ITS security. It aimed to validate the interoperability and functionality of C-V2X communications in facilitating safer and more efficient transportation systems.

This face-to-face event provided an opportunity to test C-V2X devices, in both lab and field environments at the DEKRA site in Malaga, Spain.

The test cases were mainly based on ETSI ITS standards and 3GPP test specifications. In addition to test scenarios from the previous C-V2X PLUGTESTS events, new use cases were added for the lab and field-based interoperability testing.

This event allowed testing in the ITS ecosystem under real life conditions from infrastructure to applications in vehicles, thus demonstrating interoperability of C-V2X equipment. A unique chance for solution providers to maximize the effectiveness of their ITS solutions in test environments. Test Equipment vendors did have the possibility to run the test sessions during the event.

What were the advantages of attending the 4th C-V2X PLUGTESTS event?

To assess the level of interoperability of your implementations To validate your understanding of the standards To test with (many) other real implementations and demonstrate end-to-end interoperability To debug your implementation: early bug fixing, saving time and costs To promote the technology and the ecosystem

Highway operators, automobile manufacturers and government bodies/authorities were welcome as observers. Observers were able to evaluate the test statistics in the TRT (Test Reporting Tool) provided the Rules of Engagement and Non-Disclosure Agreement of the ITS PLUGTESTS Programme have been signed.

The 4th C-V2X PLUGTESTS was combined with an associated C-V2X Workshop, which presented and discussed updates on the latest developments.

ETSI PLUGTESTS events are organized by ETSI and co-funded by the European Commission (EC) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).

Regulation (EU) 2024/1183 amending Regulation (EU) 910/2014 on electronic identities, authentication and signatures (eIDAS 2) was published in the Official Journal of the European Union this spring 2024. This amendment establishes an ambitious European Digital Identity Framework with digital identity wallets and several new trust services. This will bring about a major transformation of security of the European digital infrastructure facilitating cross border transactions and supporting seamless access to financial, governmental and commercial services across Europe with a high level of accountability.

ETSI and CEN are working together to develop several standards to support this new regulatory framework building on the latest globally recognised standards for website authentication, open identities and mobile based wallets. The workshop will present the latest status of these standards and aims to include demonstrations from large scale pilots applying the EU Digital Identity Wallet.

The Workshop is conducted by ETSI ESI Technical Committee and CEN/TC 224.

 Who should join?

The workshop will be of direct interest to all those concerned with ensuring a secure digital infrastructure across Europe including regulators, providers of mobile identity solutions, manufacturers of secure elements / smart devices, trust service providers, application and secure solution providers.

Why attending?

The CEN and ETSI  standards underpinning this new European Digital Identity Framework will have a major impact on the European market which solution providers need to be aware of to keep up with changing environment. Also, the workshop, and the following open consultation on draft standards, provide the opportunity to influence the direction taken in CEN and ETSI standards supporting the European Digital Identity Framework.
