A smart meter is an electronic device that records consumption of electricity, gas or water and communicates that information for monitoring and billing. Smart meters send meter readings to the utility company automatically. They also come with in-home displays, which give users real-time feedback on their energy or water usage and what it is costing.
European Commission Mandate M/441 seeks the creation of European standards to enable the interoperability of utility meters to improve customers’ awareness of their actual consumption. It is hoped that this will lead to a reduction in their energy usage.
We are collaborating with the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) in response to European Commission Mandate M/441 on smart metering.
Our contribution to the development of smart metering addresses several aspects:
- Machine-to-Machine communications
- the development of an application-independent ‘horizontal’ service platform capable of supporting a wide range of services including smart metering
- smart metering use cases
- the security of smart energy infrastructures
- Powerline telecommunications – using powerline technologies for smart metering and smart grid applications
- Wireless access protocols for smart metering – ETSI Technical Report TR 102 886 contains a helpful overview of our work in this area
- Radio spectrum requirements – working to find additional spectrum for smart metering
