ETSI and the Linux Foundation sign Memorandum of Understanding enabling industry standards and Open Source collaboration

Today, the Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization enabling mass innovation through sustainable open source, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with ETSI, the independent organization providing global standards for ICT services across all sectors of industry, to bring open source and standards closer and foster synergies between them.

oneM2M announced as the “Top IoT Standards Body of the Year”

On April 8, winners for the 7^th Annual Compass Intelligence Awards in IoT, Mobile, and Emerging Tech were announced. oneM2M was the winner in the category “Top IoT Standards Body of the Year”. ETSI is a founding partner of the oneM2M partnership project, along with 6 other standards bodies, ARIB, ATIS, CCSA, TTA, TTC and TIA. TSDSI joined the project in 2015.

ETSI Artificial Intelligence Summit puts things into perspective

Luis Jorge Romero, the ETSI Director-General, opened the day’s proceedings by recognizing the quantity of “natural intelligence” attending the ETSI summit on AI. Dirk Weiler, the ETSI Board Chair, launched the debate by asking the provocative question to the audience: “does AI really need standardization?”.

2019 ETSI Fellows unveiled at General Assembly award ceremony

On 2 April during the 73^rd General Assembly dinner, ETSI unveiled its three 2019 ETSI Fellows for their outstanding contribution to ETSI’s work. Awards were granted to Roberto Macchi, David Chater-Lea and Friedhelm Hillebrand.

The award ceremony took place in the beautiful Domaine de Barbossi, a resort comprising high class hotel and restaurants, a golf and tennis course and a country club, located in Mandelieu la Napoule on the Côte d’Azur.

ETSI re-elects Director-General Luis Jorge Romero

During their 73^rd General Assembly, 2-3 April 2019, ETSI members re-elected the current ETSI Director-General Mr. Luis Jorge Romero with an overwhelming majority on the first ballot.

ETSI releases three specifications for cloud-based digital signatures

The ETSI technical committee on Electronic Signature Infrastructure (TC ESI) has just released a set of three Technical Specifications for cloud-based digital signatures supporting mobile devices: ETSI TS 119 431-1, ETSI TS 119 431-2 and ETSI TS 119 432. This new set of standards supports the creation of digital signatures in the cloud, facilitating digital signature deployment by avoiding the need for specialized user software and secure devices.

22^nd Global Standards Collaboration meeting convenes world’s leading standards bodies in Montreux, Switzerland

The 22nd meeting of the Global Standards Collaboration (GSC), a high-level gathering of the world’s leading information and communication technologies (ICT) standards organizations, took place from 26-27 March 2019, hosted by IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) and ISO (International Organization for Standardization) in Montreux, Switzerland.  GSC members shared their priorities and focused on Smart Sustainable Cities and AI (Artificial Intelligence). 

ETSI Licensed Shared Access specifications for a trial in Portugal to support 5G deployment

Spectrum usage in the mid-term will tend to focus more on spectrum sharing among the various radiocommunications systems, as a principle rather than as an exception and technological and regulatory solutions need to be found that allow for this implementation. With 5G coming soon, Licensed Shared Access (LSA) gives carriers new spectrum capabilities in the absence of incumbent.

ETSI offers a Novel Approach to Standards Education

ETSI has released a new set of classroom teaching materials on ICT standardization. A comprehensive textbook, “Understanding ICT Standardization: Principles and Practice”, together with an extensive slide pack have been developed with the support of the European Commission and the EFTA Secretariat.

ETSI Multi-access Edge Computing releases Phase 2 specifications

The ETSI Multi-access Edge Computing group (MEC ISG) announces the release of its first set of Phase 2 specifications, including ETSI GS MEC 002 which includes new requirements for Phase 2, ETSI GS MEC 003 dealing with architecture and framework, and  ETSI GS MEC 009 giving general principles for service APIs.
