ETSI is pleased to announce the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the European Communications Office (ECO) to enhance cooperation on ICT standards and regulations.
This strategic agreement aims to foster closer coordination and facilitate the exchange of information between the two organisations, with the shared goal of advancing a unified European market for telecommunications, ICT, electronic communications networks and services, and related sectors.
The MoU enables both organisations to share meeting facilities and resources, benefiting regulators from 46 CEPT Member States and over 900 ETSI members. The partnership aligns with EU legislation and international obligations, including those of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), ensuring that technical standards and regulatory work are consistent and effective.
CEPT and ETSI have built a strong partnership since their first agreement in 1989, working together to advance Europe’s telecommunications and ICT sectors. The European Communications Office (ECO), as CEPT’s permanent office, supports policy development and daily operations for its member countries, serving as a centre of expertise in electronic communications.
The collaboration between ETSI and CEPT ensures consistency between technical standards and regulatory frameworks. The goal is to ensure that the efficient provision of spectrum across all sectors is supported by the timely development of standards. ETSI’s standardisation activities enable spectrum sharing and compatibility studies, while CEPT’s Electronic Communications Committee (ECC) initiatives inform ETSI’s work on new or revised standards. By sharing expertise and coordinating efforts, CEPT and ETSI help ensure European citizens benefit from modern, reliable and safe communications systems.
This renewed partnership reinforces Europe’s position as a global leader in ICT and telecommunications, ensuring that technical and regulatory developments continue to serve the public interest and support the digital transformation of society.
