ETSI ISG F5G is organizing a virtual open session entitled "F6G: Defining the Foundations of the Next Optical Network Generation" scheduled on 30 October 2025, from 10am to 1pm.

As the world continues to evolve with rapid technological advancements and emerging challenges, the development of new generations of fixed optical networks is essential to meet future demands and opportunities. F6G will build on and evolve the capabilities of the current F5G Advanced optical networks.

About the event
The objective of this open session is to begin shaping the ETSI ISG F5G vision for the next generation of optical networks - F6G - by exploring:

  • Visions and priorities for F6G from different perspectives
  • Use cases, scenarios, and business needs
  • Research and technologies currently in development for F6G
  • Key challenges on the path to F6G

Why attend?
The session will bring together stakeholders from across the optical fibre ecosystem to:

  • Share their visions and expectations about F6G
  • Present their insights
  • Discuss future directions and emerging trends

Who should attend?
The event is essentially relevant for:

  • Industry (operators, service providers, vendors)
  • Standards development organisations
  • Academia and research organisations
  • Governmental bodies.

Attendees will gain valuable insights into the future of fixed optical networks, engage directly with industry and academic experts, contribute to shaping the vision for F6G, and be part of the conversation on the development of next-generation standards and technologies.

The event programme is currently under construction.

The Programme Committee is currently calling for submissions.

As the digital world continues to evolve at an unprecedented pace, the need for a new generation of optical networks is becoming increasingly clear.

Building on the success of the Fifth Generation Fixed Networks (F5G), ETSI ISG F5G is launching an open Call for Submissions to help shape the vision and technological foundations of F6G—the future of fixed network innovation.

This open call invites operators, equipment vendors, research institutions, policy makers, and all key stakeholders in the Internet ecosystem to share their insights, visions, and technological proposals to define the next era of optical networking.

The Programme Committee is particularly interested in forward-looking perspectives that explore :

  • emerging use cases,
  • architectural evolution,
  • enabling technologies,
  • and strategic directions that will underpin the development of F6G.

Whether your submission focuses on disruptive innovations, policy frameworks, or practical deployment challenges, your voice is essential in guiding the evolution of fixed networks toward a more intelligent, sustainable, and high-perfomance future.

Join us in laying the groundwork for F6G—the foundation of tomorrow’s optical connectivity.
