Augmented Reality (AR) mixes in real-time spatially registered digital content with the experience of the real world. The Industry Specification Group on Augmented Reality Framework (ISG ARF) is defining a framework for the interoperability of AR components, systems, services, focus on advancing the adoption of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies in industrial applications.

The ARF Industrial Group is made up of representatives from companies in various industries, including automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing. The group aims to promote the use of AR and VR in industrial settings by specifying functional requirements, developing technical specifications, and promoting awareness of the benefits of these technologies.

One of the key objectives of the ARF Industrial Group is to develop technical specifications for AR and VR applications in industrial settings. This includes developing standards for hardware and software interoperability, as well as guidelines for designing effective user interfaces and immersive experiences. These specifications help ensure that AR and VR technologies are compatible with existing industrial systems and can be integrated seamlessly into workflows.

The ETSI Group Specification ARF 003 – AR Framework Architecture published in March 2020 introduces the characteristics of an AR system and defines a modular reference architecture forming the basis of the interoperability framework. The generic nature of the architecture was validated by mapping the workflow of several use cases to the components of this framework architecture.

The ARF Industrial Group also promotes awareness of the benefits of AR and VR technologies in industrial settings. By showcasing successful case studies and best practices, the group aims to inspire more companies to adopt these technologies and unlock the potential benefits, such as improved productivity, reduced downtime, and enhanced safety.

Overall, the ARF Industrial Group is an important part of ETSI's work to develop standards for emerging technologies. By focusing specifically on AR and VR in industrial settings, the group is helping to drive innovation and unlock the potential of these technologies to transform the way we work.
