ENI is progressing with 15th meeting & Technology Workshop on AI policy

The ENI#15 meeting took place from 14-17 September 2020 "online only" as many countries were affected by travel restrictions or delegates not allowed to travel.

  • 30 were present, 33 were registered
  • Operators included: Telefonica, TIM, China Telecom, China Unicom, China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, NTT and Portugal Telecom
  • Government Ministry Institutes members came from Germany, China, Japan and South Korea
  • 134 documents were handled

The meeting was very productive and achieved significant progress. It progressed the work-items drafting on the deliverables "draft GR ENI 008" on Intent Aware Network Autonomicity and "draft GR ENI 009" on Data Processing mechanisms, both planned to be approved in December. Major progress on the evaluation of categories "draft GR ENI 010" was made discussing measures of automation of the classes published last year in GR ENI 007 V1.1.1. The new draft ENI 022 on iFIT in-situ reactive telemetry framework was progressed well.

Significant progress was made on the Policy Modelling for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in ENI 005, work-item RGS/ENI-0016. An open area is approved, for all stable drafts and previously published deliverables. The meeting continued drafting within the work items for the next versions on ENI use cases, requirements and terminology for release 2. Work was progressed on “Mapping of operational systems to ENI architecture”: Draft ES 011 mapping to 3GPP and ONAP was developed. ISG ENI is now approaching the close of the 2nd release: ENI 001 Use Cases and ENI 002 Requirements are on stability review prior to approval.

The meeting also approved to send a Liaison Statement (LS) to TMForum to build a cooperation relationship on some aspects of Autonomous Network as well as a LS to ITU-T SG12 on cooperation and alignment of QoE. The Liaisons introduced ETSI ISG ENI’s work and asked for further collaboration highlighting ENI 001, ENI 005 and ENI 011.

The Extension for the 3rd term is approved.

In Progress work of ETSI ISG ENI in Release 2

The Use Cases ENI 001, Requirements ENI 002, Terminology ENI 004 and System Architecture ENI 005 are all open for the next release and work has started on each specification. A work-item on big data and its classification was approved to start ENI 009. The AI Network Categorization ENI 007 is published and a related report ENI 010 in the evaluation is progressing well.

Experiential Networked Intelligence (ENI) Release 2 specifications and reports are:

(the links above point to the work programme but specifications are open now on the open area on the ETSI server.)

All of the work-items were discussed and progressed.

Status of Proofs of Concepts

The PoC description and presentation are available on the public ETSI ENI WiKi Pages (ENI Wiki). Progress reports were accepted from PoCs 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11 & 12. PoCs 1, 2 3, 5 & 7 are completed. Finial reports were received at this meeting from PoC#04 and PoC#06 accepted by email review. A new PoC#12 proposal is available lead by China Mobile, with Huawei, CEA, Intel.

An ENI architecture ETSI webinar on Bright talk channel had 362 viewings earlier in the summer. The audience included a number of Universities (higher than normal) plus the following companies and organizations (Huawei, CISCO, SAMSUNG, Deutsche Telekom, Verizon, China Telecom, Orange, Vodafone, Toshiba, etc).

A drafting group was formed to work on a 2nd ENI white paper for the future of the ISG work. This drafting group comprised many member organizations: China Telecom, Huawei, Intel TIM, Samsung, Futurewei, AsiaInfo, Portugal Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, CEA, Telefonica, Deutsche Telekom, NTT, University of Carlos III in Madrid and CAICT.

The ISG will focus on the 2nd version of its work.

Let’s remind our readers that the ISG is open to ETSI members and non-ETSI members alike. The different players in the value chain are welcome to join the ISG effort, contribute to the development of these key specifications and demonstrate Proofs of Concepts (PoCs). To join, please contact: isgsupport@etsi.org

The ETSI ENI Industry Specification Group was created in Feb 2017, today members come from operators, vendors and research institutes all over the world.

The next ENI plenary meeting (ENI#16) will be online due to travel restrictions caused by covid-19.

Technology Workshop Meeting report

The technology workshop with the scope "The relation of ENI policy management to network intelligence" took place on Friday, 25 September 2020.

It addressed policy management assistance in ETSI ENI and explored its relation to other SDOs and open-source communities. Understanding the synergies, working together, removal of any overlaps, between ETSI ISGs/OSG and other SDOs. Each organization is addressing differing aspects. This workshop investigated the possibilities for technical co-operation between ETSI ISGs/OSG and other SDOs. Also, it aimed to develop a roadmap of future actions and ways of working together.

This workshop made no decision as the workshop was more around generating new ideas. There is a clear basis for ENI-NFV cooperation in Release 4 Feature 26. And ENI-MANO in Release 9 with MANO closed control loop design. The presentation material can be found on the open server area.
