Telco Cloud-Native/AI-Native Open Session in parallel with NFV#51

During the ETSI NFV#51 plenary meeting, on Monday 8 September 2025, a dedicated Telco-Cloud and AI-native Open Session was kindly hosted by Huawei in the meeting venue, Kameha Grand Hotel Bonn. Participants included European major operator representatives from Deutsche Telekom, Telefonica Germany and Swisscom, as well as ETSI NFV delegates who attended the NFV#51 meeting. The Open Session focused on how NFV standards can be adopted in alignment with telco cloud-native and AI-native trends in the telco industry, addressing challenges in automation, infrastructure agility, and operational simplicity.

Dr. Yoshihiro Nakajima, Chair of ETSI ISG NFV, provided a warm welcome speech, followed by Brendan Hassett, ETSI ISG NFV TSC chair, who provided a brief presentation of the highlights of the ETSI ISG NFV's recent releases work.

NFV#50 Shanghai, experiencing Chinese enthusiasm in summer

A year after the June 2024 Xi'an meeting, the ETSI ISG NFV community returned to China. This time NFV#50th plenary meeting was kindly hosted by China Telecom, in their beautiful and modern campus of China Telecom Information Park, PuDong, Shanghai. The summer in Shanghai was not only hot but also very popular. In the same week, the MWC Shanghai 2025 exhibition was held, which is the largest annual event in the Chinese telecommunications industry. On this occasion, ETSI ISG NFV was honoured to invite Chinese Communications Standard Association (CCSA) officials, Chinese mainstream operators and vendors to hold a first joint Telco Cloud workshop between ETSI ISG NFV and CCSA, to discuss the future visions and key technical directions for the Telco Cloud in the AI‑native era. NFV#47: Reunion by the Seine River, accelerate study topics on Release 6 NFV evolution

In October golden autumn, ETSI ISG NFV#47 meeting was hosted by Huawei, in Versailles area in Paris, France, from October 7th to 11th, 2024. The meeting hotel was very close to NetworkX 2024 exhibition venue, which facilitated the participation of ETSI NFV delegates to both events. The slightly cold and often rainy weather did not prevent people’s enthusiasm from discussion and communication in technical topics. The community focused on promoting Release 6 NFV evolution activities, and exchanged ideas with experts joining the NetworkX event, on Telco cloud topics and the future of NFV.

NFV#41, start of a new decade for ISG NFV

In early March, ETSI’s ISG NFV gathered again in ETSI headquarters in Sophia Antipolis. This 41st plenary meeting was collocated with a special event celebrating the 10 years anniversary of this very important Industry Specification Group adding together again many NFV friends from all around the world.  Tweeter 540x308 nfv41The NFV#41 opening plenary was held at the very beginning of the week. ETSI ISG NFV chair Yoshihiro Nakajima started by highlighting the achievements from the NFV#40 - ETSI ISG NFV continues to deliver with very good pace. As well, he took advantage to briefly announce the 10th anniversary event -a good opportunity to not only celebrate the accomplishments that NFV has made in the past 10 years, but also to look forward to the future.

The TSC manager, Ulrich Kleber presented in depth the description of Releases 4 and 5, but also an overview of the Release 6. The updated schedule for those releases was detailed showing our group’s intention to speed up the standards’ creation process and alignment with the industry fast progress in this area.

Diego Lopez, NFV NOC’s chair, started his speech by talking about the recently-published NOC's white paper. He continued by sharing recent operators’ considerations on the relationship between ETSI standards and other cloud-related standards and specifications. Some proposals for future actions were triggered for the ISG including a more direct and dynamic interaction with open-source projects and convergence of K8s and NFV network models.

NFV#38, a post-COVID19 pandemic reunion

The COVID-19 pandemic stopped ETSI NFV Industry Specification Group (ISG) face-to-face meetings for more than two years. As a result, the ISG blog posts for the plenary sessions were interrupted as well. Although people have been used to regarding online meetings as normal in the past two years, it is time now to call people back to face-to-face meetings with the gradual relaxation of epidemic prevention policies in many countries.

This time, the ETSI ISG NFV met again at NFV#38 from May 30th to June 3rd 2022, in Sophia Antipolis, France. The meeting took a hybrid format, ETSI headquarters hosted 23 delegates from Europe, Asia and North America. Many other delegates participated in the meeting remotely due to their inability to travel. This is the first time that ETSI NFV has returned to a face-to-face meeting after the COVID-19 pandemic since 2020.
