Smart, safe, sustainable traffic using Cooperative ITS was the focus of ETSI's fourth workshop on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), held from 7 to 9 February 2012 in Doha, Qatar.

Vehicle manufacturers operate on a world-wide scale and need to develop technology platforms which they can use in multiple markets. Therefore ITS technology must be standardized for global markets, taking into account local and regional requirements. The choice of venue for this year's ETSI ITS workshop, in one of the great meeting places of the world, was significant as it opened the event to participation from all over the globe.

The workshop was hosted by QUWIC, the Qatar University's Wireless Innovations Centre, at the impressive Qatar National Congress Centre in Doha, and was supported by the Qatar National Research Fund. 120 delegates heard from over 30 distinguished speakers describing the latest developments in ITS standardization in Europe, North America, China, Japan, in bodies including ETSI, CEN and ISO.

Delegates heard how ITS will become part of our daily lives, and standardization of ITS must keep people at the heart of the system. They discovered the latest results from trial deployments and research projects, including those from Qatar and the Gulf region, and were briefed on the experience gained from the joint ETSI/ERTICO interoperability trials and on the benefits of conformance testing.
