Future is bright for ETSI Reconfigurable Radio Systems Technical Committee ahead of Meeting #2

ETSI is pleased to announce the second meeting of ETSI Technical Committee TC RRS at its Headquarters in Sophia Antipolis, 2 – 4 June 2008.

Whereas meeting #1 agreed that future focus would be given to System Aspects, Equipment Architecture, Functional Architecture and Cognitive Pilot Channel and Public Safety, meeting #2 will focus on creating Work Items on several proposals received and on the internal Working Groups (WGs) structure to perform the work.

ETSI TC RRS has the responsibility to study the feasibility of standardization activities related to RRS, encompassing radio solutions related to Software Defined Radio (SDR) and Cognitive Radio (CR) research topics and to collect and define the related RRS requirements.

The main tasks of TC RRS initially are to produce Technical Reports and feasibility studies taking into account the current, technically most advanced development. Software Defined Radio (SDR) and Cognitive Radio (CR) are increasingly present in today's technical discussions for a number of applications and all links in the chain from suppliers, manufacturers, operators and regulators demonstrate concrete interest.

ETSI TC RRS will receive contributions from projects in the EC FP6 and FP7 research frameworks. One of the expected impacts of the FP7 EC Work Programme is:

'Global standards for a new generation of ubiquitous and extremely high capacity network and service infrastructures which should support convergence, full interoperability, a significantly larger and diverse number of devices, new services and complex user requirements'. 

Several EC projects are expected to contribute. E3, based on the overall FP6 E2R II actions relative to ETSI, is already taking an active role in the Technical Committee work.

The first meeting of the ETSI RRS TC (March 08) was attended by over 50 delegates and chaired by Convenor Mr. Paul Bender (Ministry of Economics and Technology D). Chairman Mr. Peter Olanders (Ericsson) was elected at the meeting thereby setting set the path for the work to be done.

Initiatives in the Public Safety area were also well presented. The Joint Research Center (JRC) of the European Commission (EC) presented the WINTSEC project which explores a mix of complementary solutions to overcome the barriers for wireless interoperability across different security agencies.

Setting up the TC and pointing the direction in the very first meeting now gives us the possibility to develop and deploy globally applicable standards for Reconfigurable Radio Systems in a highly-flexible and innovative environment and I wish TC Chairman,  Dr. Peter Olanders, every success in his future work".
