ETSI welcomes the recognition by the White House of our participation in an international group developing a Smart City Framework. The announcement comes on the opening of the Smart Cities Week event in Washington D.C.

The group, composed of NIST, ANSI, the U.S. Green Building Council, the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning, the Italian Energy and Innovation Agency, ETSI and the FIWARE Foundation, is developing a consensus framework for Smart City architectures, building upon existing standards and specifications. The objective is to develop a common white paper on consensus principles for Smart City architectures, derived from comparative analyses of existing concepts and their mapping to smart city deployments.

Within this group, ETSI aims to ensure our existing work in this domain is recognized, especially our work in the oneM2M global initiative (www.onem2m.org), of which ETSI is a founding partner. oneM2M’s interoperability specifications for the Internet of Things are already used extensively in Smart City deployments, most notably in Korea. ETSI’s participation is coordinated by our Board and draws input from oneM2M and our SmartM2M technical committee.

This recognition highlights the international scope of ETSI’s work, and further demonstrates the value in seeking global consensus through initiatives such as oneM2M, which brings together eight regional standards bodies from across the world to develop a common set of specifications for the Internet of Things.

About ETSI
ETSI produces globally-applicable standards for Information and Communications Technologies (ICT), including fixed, mobile, radio, converged, aeronautical, broadcast and internet technologies and is officially recognized by the European Union as a European Standards Organization. ETSI is an independent, not-for-profit association whose more than 800 member companies and organizations, drawn from 66 countries across five continents worldwide, determine its work programme and participate directly in its work.

About oneM2M
oneM2M is the global standards initiative that covers requirements, architecture, API specifications, security solutions and interoperability for Machine-to-Machine and IoT technologies. oneM2M was formed in 2012 and consists of eight of the world's preeminent ICT standards development organizations: ARIB (Japan), ATIS (North America), CCSA (China), ETSI (Europe), TIA (North America), TSDSI (India), TTA (Korea), and TTC (Japan), together with seven industry fora, consortia or standards bodies (Broadband Forum, CEN, CENELEC, GlobalPlatform, HGI, Next Generation M2M Consortium, OMA) and over 200 member organizations. oneM2M specifications provide a framework to support applications and services such as the smart grid, connected car, home automation, public safety, and health. oneM2M actively encourages industry associations and forums with specific application requirements to participate in oneM2M, in order to ensure that the solutions developed support their specific needs. For more information, including how to join and participate in oneM2M, see: www.onem2m.org.
