SMEs and standards

SMEs can become a member of ETSI and can then directly participate in an ETSI standardization committee, contributing to the development of any ETSI standard or specification. 25% of ETSI’s member organization are SMEs.

ETSI’s direct participation model offers SMEs many strategic benefits. Participation in standardization provides visibility and reputational enhancement to an SME, allowing it to be considered as one of those who wrote the standard and having deep technical expertise in the subject. It also offers opportunities to develop contacts with potential customers or partners, and to accumulate knowledge of competitor’s positions, in addition to deep inside knowledge of the standard and what might not be written explicitly in the text. In order to maximize these benefits, SMEs should consider volunteering for roles such as rapporteur, vice chair or chair of working groups and committees.
