ETSI, with the support of Technical Committee ATTM (Access, Terminals, Transmission and Multiplexing) Working Group TM mWT (Transmission & Multiplexing – millimetre Wave Transmission), organised the fifth ETSI mWT SDN (Software Defined Networking) Plugtests™ event, which took place from 10 to 14 November 2025 at ETSI in Sophia Antipolis, France. This event was co-funded by the European Union (EU) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).

The format of the event was lab tests conducted at ETSI.

WHAT WERE THE OBJECTIVES AND SCOPE OF THE 5TH mWT SDN PLUGTESTS EVENT?

This edition of the Plugtests event focused on proving the ability of Software Defined Networking (SDN) to operate from an end-to-end service point of view.

Building upon the previous four editions, which focused primarily on hardware inventory and service use cases, this edition included basic performance monitoring and alarm/event reporting functionalities*.

The scope of the event covered four use cases:

  1. Network and Service Auto-discovery
  2. Service Provisioning
  3. Performance Analysis & Prediction
  4. Smart Alarm Analysis & Fault Prediction.

*Based on the concepts outlined in ETSI GR mWT 025 V1.1.1 (2021-03) - Wireless Backhaul Network and Services Automation: SDN SBI YANG models

WHO COULD PARTICIPATE?

Any microwave (MW) and millimetre wave (mmW) equipment vendor was welcome to participate and had to provide a full domain, including the related MW and/or mmW equipment.

The event was also open to telecom operators who wanted to understand the benefits of the SDN technology.

This Plugtests event was organised by ETSI and co-funded by the European Union (EU) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).

REGISTRATION

All participants were expected to register individually to this event. The first person from an organisation to register for the event was de facto the official contact for technical and administrative matters.

The deadline to register was 15 September 2025.

RoE and NDA

By registering for the 5th mWT SDN Plugtests event, new participating organisations joining the mWT Plugtests Programme were asked to sign the Rules of Engagement (RoE) and Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA).

These RoE and NDA will cover the series of remote and face-to-face Plugtests events which are held as part of the mWT Plugtests Programme.

Companies which previously signed the RoE and NDA of the mWT Plugtests Programme when registering to the previous mWT Plugtests event, did not need to sign the RoE and NDA again. Only new organisations joining the Programme received the RoE and NDA for signature.

Upon signature of the RoE and NDA sent to the official contact, the new participants received their credentials for the mWT Plugtests Programme Wiki. Participants who had joined the mWT Plugtests Programme at an earlier stage and had already signed the RoE and NDA kept their existing credentials, which they could reuse for the 5th mWT Plugtests Wiki.

Participants were not be allowed to participate in the event if the RoE and NDA of the Programme have not been signed by a representative of their organisation.

The deadline to sign the RoE and NDAs was 22 September 2025.
