ETSI is pleased to invite the international teaching community to its first face-to-face seminar on teaching ICT standardization.
Professors, lecturers, and other teaching professionals will gather at ETSI on 6 October with the aim of forming the next generation of ICT Standards People.
About Teaching ICT Standardization
As one of the leading standards bodies for ICT in Europe, and officially recognized by the European Union, ETSI has developed a textbook and a set of teaching materials on ICT standardization. Its 2nd edition, published in February 2022, “Understanding ICT Standardization: Principles and Practice”, was produced together with an extensive set of nearly 400 slides to be used as teaching aides. The teaching materials are versatile, may be used in full or in parts, and are suitable for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, whether focusing on technical, legal, or commercial aspects.
The textbook is available free of charge to all. The complimentary comprehensive slide sets are available exclusively for teaching staff and upon request.
ETSI is currently partnering with almost 50 European universities, which have successfully integrated ICT standardization into their students’ curriculum, thus adding specific value to the course content. We offer advice and support to academic institutions that would like to follow such a path.
Why attend this event?
By joining the one-day event on 6 October, university professors, lecturers, and other teaching professionals have the opportunity to deep-dive into the different aspects of ICT standardization and quickly grasp how to make the best use of the materials. Each chapter of ETSI's teaching material will be presented by their author, who will also share their teaching methodology and tips during their interactive session.
Hosted in ETSI’s headquarters in Sophia Antipolis, ‘the Silicon Valley of Europe’, it offers a unique opportunity to meet the authors of the teaching materials and to provide comments and feedback. Furthermore, it is an excellent occasion to connect with the academic community and exchange best practices during the networking cocktail at the end of the day.

The ETSI materials are unique in that it provides a global overview of ICT standardization, shaped by independent authors who come from the international academic community.
Prof. Nizar Abdelkafi, Politecnico di MilanoProf. Nizar Abdelkaf is associate professor in Supply Chain Planning and Management at Politecnico di Milano. Before joining Politecnico di Milano, he was head of the research unit “Business Models: Engineering and Innovation” at Fraunhofer IMW (International Management and Knowledge Economy) and senior researcher at the department of Innovation Management and Innovation Economics at the University of Leipzig. He holds an Industrial Engineering diploma from the National Engineering School Tunis, a Master degree in Business Administration from the Technische Universität München, a PhD degree from the Hamburg University of Technology and habilitation degree from the University of Leipzig. Nizar Abdelkaf is interested in supply chain innovation, innovative business models, standardization along with sustainability management. He has published his research in three books, several international journals such as International Journal of Innovation Management, Journal of Cleaner Production, Supply Chain Management: An International Journal, Creativity and Innovation Management, and IEEE transactions on Engineering Management, as well as over 50 conference papers and book chapters. Prof. Rudi Bekkers, Eindhoven University of Technology
Prof. Rudi Bekkers is a full professor at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands and specializes in the relationship between standardization and intellectual property rights. Over the last 20 years, he has published papers in established journals such as Research Policy, Technological Forecasting and Social Change (TFTS) and California Management Review, and is regularly invited as speaker at key events, both within academic as outside. In addition, he performed more than a dozen commissioned studies, including the 2014 study ‘Patents and Standards’ and the 2020 study “Pilot Study for Essentiality Assessment of Standard Essential Patents”, both for the European Commission. He was appointed as a committee member by the US National Academies of Science (NAS) on this topic. His is furthermore appointed by the Dutch government as a member of their advisory board on standards (Forum Standardisatie) and appointed as a member of the IEEE-SA Europe Advisory Council. Rudi also served as an advisor and expert witness in may court cases involving standard essential patents.
Prof. Raffaele Bolla, University of GenoaProf. Raffaele Bolla is a Full Professor of Telecommunications Networks at the University of Genoa and belongs to the Department of Naval, Electrical, Electronics, and Telecommunications Engineering (DITEN). Prof. Bolla is the holder of numerous courses in the telecommunications networks sector, offered at several master's degree courses in Engineering, and is the Coordinator of the master's degree course in "Internet and Multimedia Engineering". He is also Deputy Director of the National University Consortium of Telecommunications (CNIT). Prof. Bolla is the founder and manager of a laboratory and a research group called Telecommunications Networks and Telematics (TNT, www.tntlab.unige.it). It was and is responsible for the University and CNIT of numerous and relevant research projects and contracts (of which nine European FP7 and H2020 projects) both with public institutions (Italian Ministries, regional bodies, European Union, ...) and with private companies operating in the telecommunications sector. He also boasts signifcant activities within standardization bodies such as ETSI and ITU-T, within which he is involved in various Technical Committees and working groups. He carries out an intense revision activity for international journals, projects, and conferences. He is coauthor of more than 200 scientifc publications in international journals, books, and congresses and, currently (2021), boasts an h-index (Scopus) of 20 and a citation number of 2200. His current research interests are mainly focused on: 1. Mechanisms and techniques for reducing energy consumption in TLC networks. 2. "Softwarization" approaches to networks through NFV and SDN in the 5G and behind context. 3. Integration between Fog, Edge Computing, and telecommunications networks. 4. Architectures for IT security in multidomain Cloud environments. Dr. Alejandro Rodriguez-Ascaso, UNED - Spanish National Distance Learning University
Dr. Alejandro Rodriguez-Ascaso has a PhD. in Telecommunications Engineering from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). He is a lecturer and researcher at the Department of Artifcial Intelligence at the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED, Spanish National Distance Learning University). His main teaching and research interests are in the area of accessible human-computer interaction, adaptive and open learning resources, telecare and ICT mediated support for personal autonomy. Within these areas, he has taken part in national and international research projects, and he has published works in international journals and proceedings of international scientifc conferences. He is teaching in related undergraduate, postgraduate and open-learning programmes. Furthermore, he is active in national and international standardization activities in the feld of digital accessibility and user experience. He is currently the convenor of the Accessibility Workgroup of the Telecommunications Technical Committee (CTN 133/GT3) of the Spanish Association for Standardization (UNE). He has also been member of several Specialist Task Forces of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). Furthermore, he is a Spanish delegate for the ISO/IEC JTC 1 SC 35 “User interfaces”.
Dr. Michelle Wetterwald, Lecturer in Engineering Schools in Sophia Antipolis & ParisDr Michelle Wetterwald graduated as an engineer from Telecom Bretagne and doctor from Telecom ParisTech, France. She is a Networking and Mobile Systems expert at Netellany in Sophia Antipolis, South of France with over thirty years of experience in various positions in academia and in the ICT industry. Her domain of interest is the connectivity of mobile devices in wireless networks and the design and standardization of Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C ITS) and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, as well as emergency situations analysis. She has been involved at ETSI since 2008, starting with TC ITS standardization committee, complemented now by TC SmartM2M and SC EMTEL. She was also involved in the IPWAVE working group at IETF and is an active participant in AIOTI WG03 (standardization). She teaches as part time lecturer in Engineering schools in Sophia Antipolis and Paris and contributes to technical analysis and standardisation projects for ETSI and SMEs, in partnership with FBConsulting, LU. She is author and co-author of 6 patents on early WLAN systems and 60+ papers on advanced wireless networking mechanisms. She is a Senior Member of the IEEE.
