ETSI Security Week 2019

Middlebox Security Protocol (MSP) Hackathon

key Sophia Antipolis, France
Event Free of Charge

Middleboxes are essential to the operation and the cybersecurity of networks. With the Middlebox Security Protocol (MSP) set of ETSI deliverables recently published and attracting journalistic attention, these standards are one of the hottest topics coming out of TC CYBER this year. This hackathon will set the scene for MSP: why it’s needed and how it can be used, an explainer of what the standards mean, and demonstrator code for developers to get hands-on and create their own implementations for their use case.
Objectives:
Following on from the successful middlebox hackathon last summer, this hackathon will focus on implementations of Part 2 and Part 3 of the MSP multi-deliverable from TC CYBER. Participants will:

  • Learn about the TC CYBER Middlebox Standards
  • Understand the use cases for middleboxes
  • Create and develop existing code for MSP through hands-on practical implementation

The objectives are:

  • To familiarise developers, systems engineers and other technical experts with emerging protocols for middlebox security for trusted encrypted traffic visibility
  • To promote new TC CYBER Middlebox Security Protocol specifications for use in middlebox implementations for enhanced cyber security, infrastructure protection, and other operational requirements
  • To encourage anyone to create, demonstrate, and compare their own middlebox security protocol(s)
  • To encourage work on analysis at the middlebox, detecting attacks, enhancing trust, and auditing
  • To identify, through practical implementations, any unknown difficulties or vulnerabilities for the ETSI Middlebox Security Protocol specifications

Target audience & contributions:
The introductory morning will be of interest to industry, cyber security centres, network and cloud data centre operators, enterprise network users, and public officials concerned about the challenges of cyber security and management of encrypted network traffic between hosted services and user or device end points – especially for mobile, NFV, 5G, automotive, and IoT uses.
For the hackathon sessions, developers interested in hands-on development and anyone new to the standard or with a middlebox use case are welcome to attend, share ideas and learn about MSP. Students on relevant educational programmes are also welcome.
If you are interested in participating, join in the Slack conversation now: middleboxhackathon.slack.com by sending an email to middlebox_hackathon@list.etsi.org.
Submit your ideas on the Slack conversation. Examples of ideas: middlebox use cases, existing implementations of the MSP standards, current use of middleboxes, flaws in middleboxes, and input to future MSP deliverables.
The selected contributions will be used to kick off the hackathon and scope the coding sessions during the event.
