ISG THz

Co-ordinating pre-standardisation efforts on communication technology in the THz range, resulting from various collaborative research projects and global initiatives, paving the way towards future standardisation.

ETSI’s Industry Specification Group Terahertz (ISG THz) provides a collaborative platform to share and consolidate pre-standardisation work on Terahertz technologies. This activity builds on outcomes from collaborative research projects and relevant global initiatives, with the objective of paving the way for future standardisation of THz communications.

ISG THz focuses on establishing the technical foundations required for the development and future standardisation of THz communication systems operating in the frequency range from 0.1 THz to 10 THz.

Key areas of work

Channel measurements and modelling

Development of measurement methodologies and accurate channel models tailored to THz communications, enabling reliable performance evaluation and technology validation.

  • What we do

ISG THz conducts pre-standardisation activities to support future THz system development, including:

    • Define target scenarios and relevant use cases for THz communications.
    • Identify and study frequency bands of interest in the 0.1–10 THz range.
    • Analyse THz-specific propagation phenomena, including:
      • Molecular absorption.
      • Effects of micro-mobility.
      • Scattering, reflections, and diffractions.
      • Near-field propagation effects.
    • Analyse data from existing THz measurement campaigns reported in the literature.
    • Perform radio channel measurements for selected scenarios and frequency bands.
    • Develop THz channel models based on measurements and simulations.
    • Assess the state of the art of materials and technologies for THz communications, including electronics, photonics and plasmonics.
    • Study channel bandwidth feasibility, RF hardware effects and RF/analogue impairments.
