ETSI workshop: improving Quality of Emerging Services for Speech and Audio

The ETSI STQ (Speech and multimedia Transmission Quality) Workshop that took place on 21-22 November 2022 in Bratislava (Slovakia) was hosted by Amazon. It focused on a user-centred perspective of the Quality of Emerging Services for Speech and Audio.

The event was attended by organizations providing a rich mix of inputs and perspectives from industry, regulators, and academia. Through presentations, discussions and professional networking, this STQ Workshop demonstrated a very high level of engagement by all participants, with stimulating interaction among all speakers and the audience.

Highlights of the event included the transition of communication concepts moving from human-to-human to human-to-machine, and then to machine-to-machine. A challenge from a speech and transmission quality perspective lays on the increasing complexity of the communication structure, encompassing very large data sets which need to be understood and filtered adequately to satisfy the needs of industry and users. This allows to provide the right balance of commercial benefits vs personal privacy. As a result, it is crucial to acquire relevant data, then filter and process it in order to interpret and extract the meaningful content to facilitate well-informed decisions.

In the light of such challenges, the STQ standardization goals are to provide standards that define how to capture the properties of today’s systems, the modelling of which is increasingly complex. This will enable the stakeholders to infer how such systems function, and ultimately, to deliver high Quality of Service and Quality of Experience to the end users. The ETSI STQ experts converged towards a common plan to work together in this direction, to maintain the high credibility gained by the group and to keep producing high quality world class ETSI standards. The ETSI STQ Workshop proved to be an event of paramount importance and usefulness to foster such collaboration.
