ETSI announces first interoperability event for future railway communication

Sophia Antipolis, 19 April 2021

ETSI has announced that its Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) Plugtestsā„¢ event will take place from 14 to 18 June 2021. Over 20 vendors and more than 80 participants will participate.

GSM-R is the current standard for the railway telecommunication services developed and maintained by ETSI TC RT. With the increased need for more throughput, higher capacity and flexible deployment options, FRMCS is being developed based on 3GPP Mission Critical Services.

The remote event will validate equipment interoperability using test scenarios based on the 3GPP Mission Critical work - with its focus on the rail specific features, testing for railways-oriented capabilities like Functional Aliases, Multi-talker and MCData IP Connectivity.

Using Over-The-Top (OTT) tests via VPN connections from the vendor labs, the tests will be based on 3GPP, ETSI and IETF standards, and are designed for the following equipment:

  • MCX Application Servers (MCPTT, MCDATA, MCVIDEO)
  • MCX Clients (MCPTT, MCDATA, MCVIDEO)
  • UEs and Cab Radios
  • eMBMS Components
  • IMS / SIP Cores
  • Consoles and Control Rooms
  • Railways Test Equipment

The purpose and scope of the FRMCS Plugtests event are to test independently and jointly all components of the Mobile communication system for railways. Railway related test cases are available in ETSI TS 103 564. Additional railway-oriented test cases will be developed specifically for this event. Interop demonstrations for observers will also take place where different vendors will showcase interoperability by executing the Plugtests test cases.
