Listen to ETSI webinar: “IPv6 Enhanced Innovation: the IPv6-only Future in the 5G, IoT & Cloud Era"

Sophia Antipolis, 17 September 2021

ETSI has successfully held two webinars on ‘IPv6 Enhanced Innovation: the IPv6-Only Future in the 5G, IoT & Cloud Era’ on 13 September. They are available at the following locations:

Part 1: https://www.brighttalk.com/webcast/12761/497800;

Part 2: https://www.brighttalk.com/webcast/12761/497809

Ten experts from government institutions, operators, manufacturers and research institutes, shared their vision and the progress made to date within ETSI ISG (Industry Specification Group) IPE (IPv6 Enhanced innovation).

IPE webinar news 2021 in articleAnthony Brand, Director of Standards Development Centre ETSI, opened the webinar by introducing ISG IPE’s achievements during the past nine months with the involvement of more than 60 players while Latif Ladid, Chair of ETSI ISG IPE, highlighted the most recent IPv6 policies in France, UK, USA and China. Jorge Pereira, from the European Commission, introduced the challenges and future of 5G for CAM (Connected and Automated Mobility).

Pascal Thubert, IETF 6TiSCH/LPWAN WG chair from Cisco, underlined that IPE starts where the IETF ends, and showed how IPv6 for industrial networks is the logical evolution due to their deterministic behavior. Robin Li, IETF IAB member from Huawei, recapped the major findings of the GAP analysis report recently published.

John Lee from Internet Associates, rapporteur of the IPv6-Only use cases, underlined that the US government has an ambitious goal: migrating 80% of the Federal network to IPv6-Only. Hence, the IPv6-Only migration should start as soon as possible to avoid high costs if implemented at the last minute. Ralph Wallace from Verizon stated that IPv6 is the only option to ensure future growth and Internet innovation enforcing cybersecurity principles.

Chongfeng Xie, China Telecom underlined the importance of IPv6 Enhanced Innovation in data centers and cloud integration while Sebastien Lourdez, POST Luxemburg, highlighted the role of SRv6 in 5G networks. As for Carlos Ralli Ucendo, Telefonica, he illustrated how multinational sectors embrace IPv6 and the next steps to take. He gave us customers’ feedback regarding the cost of IPv4 and the complexity of international VPN and how IPv6 solved most of these issues.

Created in October 2020, ISG IPE aims at producing best practices regarding global IPv6 adoption, reference e2e architecture including emerging business scenarios and policies for global IPv6 adoption. IPE has already published its first report on Gap Analysis involving more than ten stakeholders, pointing out the usability of IPv6 in all the scenarios and the need to continue the IPv6 Enhanced innovation including features of ubiquitous connectivity, ultra-high bandwidth, automation, low latency, deterministic quality and security..
