Technical Committee (TC) Broadband Radio Access Networks (BRAN) Activity Report 2022

Chair: Guido Hiertz (Ericsson GmbH, Eurolab)

Responsible for the standardization of present and future Broadband Radio Access Networks.

Our Broadband Radio Access Networks committee (TC BRAN) produces and maintains standards and specifications for current and future Wireless Access System (WAS) and Radio Local Area Network (RLAN) technologies in different frequency ranges. The committee has primary responsibility for all aspects of standardization for broadband radio access networks, including systems as defined in ITU-R Recommendation F.1399-1.

The committee’s publications in 2022 notably include:

Delivered to the EC in May, EN 303 722 is a Harmonised Standard for access to radio spectrum, addressing Wideband Data Transmission Systems (WDTS) for Fixed Network Radio Equipment operating in the 57 - 71 GHz band.

Also delivered to the EC in May, revises an existing Harmonised Standard for access to radio spectrum, addressing TV White Space Devices operating in the 470 - 694 MHz TV broadcast band.

Originally published in 2021, a further Harmonised Standard EN 302 567 on access to radio spectrum for Multiple-Gigabit radio equipment operating in the 60 GHz band achieved OJEU listing in March 2022.

Published in June, Technical Specification TS 103 754 describes a set of performance test cases for Multiple Access Point (MAP) networks.

In March, TC BRAN submitted EN 303 687 (6 GHz WAS/RLAN) for assessment by the EC. Because of a lack of funding at this time, no assessment could be conducted. Therefore, TC BRAN submitted EN 303 687 to ENAP, in July. Having resolved all ENAP comments, TC BRAN submitted the draft HS to the EC once its assessment program restarted in November. TC BRAN will address all EC comments before performing ENAP recirculation of the draft HS.

Also in November, the EC accepted EN 303 753 (Wideband Data Transmission Systems (WDTS) for Mobile and Fixed Radio Equipment operating in the 57 GHz - 71 GHz band) for assessment. Once the assessment results are available, TC BRAN will address all comments and afterwards, initiate ENAP on the draft HS.

TC BRAN has greatly improved the quality of EN 301 893 (5 GHz WAS/RLAN). During TC BRAN’s December meeting, the draft HS is expected to be finalized. Afterwards, TC BRAN will request EC assessment on the draft.

TC BRAN’s work on TR 103 721 (WAS/RLAN mitigation techniques in the 5725 – 5850 MHz) neared completion, with release of the Technical Report for publication anticipated by the end of 2022.
