NFV#23 – Quebecois Summer

I’d never been to Montreal (or Quebec) until this summer, and I had the double pleasure of visiting Montreal just before my holidays, as well as soon after them. These visits allowed me to get acquainted with Quebecois summer (surprisingly warmer than back home, in Southern Spain), several delicacies (both poutine and the amazing smoked meat, and some really good microbreweries), the crowded Montreal airport (at least on Friday evenings), and the easygoing nature of a city that makes life so smooth and work so productive.

And a productive week it was indeed. It was the first meeting after I was appointed chair of ETSI NFV for a second term, an honor I really appreciate and that I can only respond to by committing to do my best to keep ISG NFV where this extraordinary community has already brought it: at the core of the radical transformation towards the next generation of networks. And the leadership team is strengthened with the re-appointment of Joan Triay (NTT DOCOMO) as chair of the Technical Steering Committee, leaving the technical management of our extensive work program in the best possible hands.

It was also a meeting for consolidating our vision for the future, defining a common view that, with all the natural differences among the diverse organizations contributing to the NFV effort, will guide us in a new two-year term for the ISG. There was an in-depth discussion about the future of the group during one of our much-loved evening sessions, and the goals for the new term were agreed and submitted to the ETSI Director General for approval, just in time to be discussed at the September ETSI Board meeting.NFV23The initial phase, in which the basic NFV concepts and the NFV architectural framework were defined, established a firm foundation for the extensive specification work required to enable an open ecosystem for this new technology. Building on this foundation, as well as climbing a very steep learning curve, required the two first terms of the ISG, with the third that is about to be completed, focused on making the NFV promise suitable for real operations, and establishing the baseline for telecommunications and enterprise networks evolution, infrastructure deployment, service development, and management automation in a software-defined networking world.

What is more, the ISG has managed to explore and enhance the consensus mechanisms required to more rapidly define standards by fostering collaboration with SDOs and related initiatives, especially open-source communities. We have facilitated fruitful practical collaboration with these communities, and the industry in general, boosting prospects for interoperability, as demonstrated by the three successful interoperability events held to date. The ETSI NFV community intends to continue consolidating, improving and evolving the NFV foundation specifications as the key enablers of an ecosystem and strengthening the cross-industry collaborative mechanisms which will boost progress and ensure an agile response to the evolving industry needs.

To give you some more detail, the community intends to focus its work during this new term on:

  • The maintenance and enhancement of the current specifications, most importantly aligning them with feedback coming from deployment and operational experience, and considering the emerging requirements of next-generation network infrastructures (yes, you can think of 5G here, to start with…).
  • Providing solutions for specific technical issues identified by the industry once the concepts and initial specifications have undergone detailed practical scrutiny, especially issues related to network function lifecycle including testing and monitoring practices, end-to-end service management and resilience issues (e.g. security, reliability, performance, etc.).
  • Consideration of emerging new virtualization techniques including supporting cloud-native implementation methodologies. It is worth noting that, in the light of these technical enhancements, the group leaves the door open to considering an evolution of the NFV architectural framework.
  • Continuing our strong commitment to fostering interoperability by promoting and coordinating the interoperability events and enhancing the active collaboration framework with relevant open-source projects. This includes the adaptation of the proof-of-concept framework we used in the early days to assess specification needs to foster adoption including incorporating applied research results and bridging the gap with academic and industry research to guide the future evolution of the technology.
  • Acting as the central point for coordination with external bodies (i.e. SDOs and open-source projects) in matters regarding information and data models, and APIs.
  • Ensuring the adaptation of NFV principles and specifications to new application environments, especially those enabled by the emergence of 5G infrastructures as well as new industrial networking scenarios.

In addition to the strategy discussions in Montreal, the working groups demonstrated once again their amazing ability to collect, discuss and find consensus on a great number of contributions. All the working groups saw their work items advance. In addition to the usual maintenance work that we are performing on the Release 2 specifications, some of the Release 3 related features also made substantial progress. For example, cloud-native VNF support, container-based management, multi-site connectivity, NFVI software upgrades, etc. This is on top of the successful completion of Stage 2 work on five features this summer: host reservation, NFV-MANO policy management, support of Network Service (NS) across multiple administrative domains, NFV-MANO management, and VNF snapshotting.

In Montreal, the ISG plenary approved the final draft of soon-to-be-published ETSI GS NFV-TST 009, and saw the completion of the final drafts of the DGR/NFV-IFA012 and DGS/NFV-EVE011 work items, which are currently undergoing approval via remote consensus. Another major outcome was the starting of a number of new work items to progress specification of Release 3 features that were completed at Stage 2 level (i.e., requirements, architecture, interface and information model) in the first half of the year. The new work items that were approved are:

  • DGS/NFV-SOL009 on “RESTful protocols specification for the management of NFV-MANO”. This work item will specify the protocols and data models based on the requirements specified in DGS/NFV-IFA031 related to the management of NFV-MANO.
  • DGS/NFV-SOL010 on “VNF Snapshot Package specification”. This work item will specify the structure and format of the packages containing VNF snapshots; a new feature introduced in Release 3 which enables the network operator to “capture” running VNF instances to enable root cause analysis, automation and testing use cases.
  • DGS/NFV-SOL011 on “RESTful protocols specification for the Or-Or reference point”. This work item will specify a set of RESTful protocols and data models to fulfill the requirements specified in ETSI GS NFV-IFA 030, which introduced the feature of Network Services (NS) across multiple administrative domains.

All these new stage 3 work items are in addition to the work items opened already during the summer to propagate the existing Release 2 APIs (NFV-SOL002/SOL003/SOL005) and VNF Package specifications (NFV-SOL004) into Release 3.

As you can see, there were plenty of matters to deal with on my second visit to Montreal within such a short time; but we all returned home satisfied that we had addressed them in a satisfactory way, and with the renewed excitement of a full new term ahead of us. I look forward to seeing many of you at NFV#24 in December at ETSI, if not sooner somewhere in the NFV world.
