Satellite for Transport

Overview

As consumers' expectations of being able to communicate anywhere, anytime, grow, various applications are being developed that require installation of satellite earth stations on modes of transport such as ships, trains and aircraft. Typically, these would be to provide access to broadcast and mobile communication services.

ETSI produces standards for such applications.

Vessels and trains

To date, ETSI's work on standards for satellite earth stations on board vessels and trains has been limited to Harmonized Standards that may be used to demonstrate compliance of equipment with European Commission's R&TTE Directive:

  • EN 302 340 - Earth stations on board vessels operating in 11/12/14 GHz frequency bands for Fixed Satellite Service
  • EN 301 447 - Earth stations on board vessels operating in 4/6 GHz frequency bands for Fixed Satellite Service (not yet published)
  • EN 302 448 - Earth stations on board trains operating in 14/12 GHz frequency bands (not yet published).

Aircraft

ETSI has also produced European Standard EN 301 473 for Aircraft Earth Station equipment for operation in the Aeronautical Mobile Satellite Service (AMSS)/Mobile Satellite Service (MSS), and/or in the Aeronautical Mobile Satellite on Route Service (AMS(R)S)/Mobile Satellite Service (MSS).

Standards

The following is a list of recently published and frequently downloaded standards. Please use the ETSI Work Programme to find further related standards.
