Sophia Antipolis, France, 28 October 2025
ETSI is pleased to announce the appointment of the new leadership team for the Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) Industry Specification Group (ISG) for its second two-year release, commencing 17 November 2025. The renewed leadership team will continue the work of accelerating ISAC pre‑standardisation efforts to facilitate 6G development and contribute to forthcoming specifications in key global standards, including 3GPP and IEEE 802.
Following the election on 21 October 2025, the ISAC ISG will now be led by the following leadership team:
- Alain Mourad, Senior Director and Head of Wireless Lab Europe at InterDigital, Chair (Re-elected): Dr Mourad brings over two decades of experience in wireless research and global standardisation across ETSI, 3GPP, DVB, ATSC, IEEE 802, and IETF. A recognised leader in wireless research and innovation, he has held senior leadership roles at InterDigital, Samsung Electronics, and Mitsubishi Electric, and currently serves on the ETSI Board.
- Richard Stirling-Gallacher, Research Expert and Team Manager at Huawei Technologies, Vice-Chair (Re-elected): Dr Stirling-Gallacher leads a Huawei Munich Research Center team on ISAC and advanced positioning. With extensive experience in Europe and the US, he has driven pre-standardisation research on 5G NR positioning, massive MIMO and V2x and holds more than 140 granted US patents.
- Ayman Naguib, Senior Manager at Apple, Vice-Chair (Re‑elected): Dr Naguib leads Apple’s SWE Wireless Systems Research Group and has nearly three decades of experience in wireless R&D and leadership. An IEEE Fellow, he is widely recognised for his ground-breaking contributions to wireless technologies.
- Christos Masouros, Professor of Signal Processing and Wireless Communications at University College London, Vice-Chair (Newly elected): Professor Masouros is a Fellow of the IEEE and IET and a leading academic in wireless signal processing, with research interests in ISAC, Green Communications, and Large-Scale MIMO Systems. He has published over 300 IEEE publications, earning multiple international best paper awards, and the prestigious UK Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship between 2011-2016.
"I’m honoured to continue leading the vital work of the ISAC ISG, particularly as we enter this critical next phase", said Alain Mourad, Senior Director and Head of Wireless Lab Europe at InterDigital. "We remain steadfast in our commitment to advancing ISAC pre-standardisation and to reinforcing the technical underpinnings that will enable ISAC capabilities in 6G systems".
To inform the current planning cycle, a workshop was held on 21 October 2025 to gather ETSI members' insights and establish alignment on key priorities for the 2nd Release. With this consensus as the foundation, the group will invite work item proposals for approval at its upcoming plenary meeting, scheduled for 16‑18 December 2025, in London.
Initial directions for the ISG's work programme will focus on developing advanced architecture enablers and protocols, in addition to solutions that enhance privacy, security and resilience. The group will also explore energy-efficient ISAC technologies, as well as the intersections of ISAC with AI and computing, to support the evolution of the next-generation wireless systems.
To date, the ISAC ISG has already established itself as a leading forum for defining use cases, requirements, channel models, and architectures for ISAC within future 6G systems. Building on the momentum of its first release, the group will now take the work of the first Release to its logical conclusion and continue to advance the enabling frameworks and protocols that will make ISAC a reality.
