Sophia Antipolis, 17 July 2014

Standards for Internet of Things (IoT) were the focus of the latest in ETSI’s series of workshops, held on 3-4 July, in Sophia Antipolis, France.  This event was jointly organized with the European Commission, which brought a new perspective to the discussions.

More than 130 attendees from over 20 countries had the opportunity to exchange and brainstorm on IoT for people, IoT in motion, IoT at home, IoT in the city and IoT for energy. For each domain, the topics addressed in this workshop included policy and regulation, privacy and security, cross sector issues, and an update on the status of research and development.

Some of the key findings of the workshop included the need for clear business cases to propel Internet of Things to the next level of implementation, the demand for legal certainty regarding regulation and privacy issues, the challenge to integrate technologies from many industrial sectors and the necessity to bring together the many standards bodies and consortia working in this field.

ETSI addresses the issues raised by connecting potentially billions of smart objects in the Internet of Things, by developing standards for data security, data management, data transport and data processing. ETSI focuses on interoperable and cost-effective market-driven standards, centred on the oneM2M partnership project which ETSI jointly established with six other standards bodies worldwide. ETSI’s Internet of Things standardization work covers Machine-to-Machine communications, Intelligent Transport Systems, eHealth, smart body area networks, smart appliances, RFID, short range devices, low throughput networks, and the optimization of telecoms networks to efficiently transport M2M traffic or machine-type communications.

ETSI regularly organizes free, open workshops on its technology standards. Consult www.etsi.org/events to find events of interest to you.
