India's 'Electronic City' welcomes TTCN-3

Sophia Antipolis, France – 26th November 2009

Experts in test software from India and other parts of Asia have declared their strongest-ever commitment to the testing technology known as TTCN-3 (Testing and Test Control Notation Version 3). They had gathered at the second Asian TTCN-3 User Conference (T3UC) which took place from 16 to 18 November in Bangalore, home of India's 'Electronic City'.

Presentations demonstrated the successful use of TTCN-3 in the security, telecommunication and financial domains, and included wireless communication technologies such as Long Term Evolution (LTE) and WiMax. Other contributions reported on the successful application of TTCN-3 in automated (end-to-end) interoperability testing, TTCN-3 test system implementation and the integration of TTCN-3 in model-based testing.

Support for the TTCN-3 technology was further confirmed by the strong presence of tool vendors and service providers who provided sponsorship and exhibited their products. The sponsors of the conference were Wipro (Platinum Sponsor), Nexus Telecom and Testing Technologies (Gold Sponsors), and Conformiq and Elvior (Silver Sponsors). Voice&Data was the conference media partner.

The conference was co-organized by ETSI (the European Telecommunications Standards Institute) and ISQT, a Bangalore-based training and consultancy company specializing in software testing and test automation.  Wipro Technologies provided technical support to the event.

This was the first time the user conference has been held in India – one of the world's key emerging markets – and took place in Bangalore's NIMHANS convention centre. The decision to hold the event in India was in recognition of the huge interest in the region in this versatile and powerful software language. The high quality of submitted presentations, as well as the highest number of participants and sponsoring companies seen in the event's eight year history, proved that Asia - in particular India - is taking testing and the TTCN-3 technology very seriously, and that the region is well-advanced in the deployment of the technology into new application domains. The award for the best presentation was presented to Bushra Taha and Shri Lenka Panchangam of Infosys for their work on "Regression Suites in Financial Services Using TTCN-3".

Anthony Wiles, Director of the ETSI Centre for Testing and Interoperability, said, "The technical quality and scope of the presentations reflected the rapid uptake of TTCN-3 in India in general, and in India's IT capital, Bangalore, in particular. This is a clear indication that TTCN-3 is the globally accepted standardized testing language."

Gangadharaiah C P, Senior Vice President Testing Services, Wipro Technologies, said, "Wipro is pleased at the good response and success of the TTCN-3 User Conference Asia 2009. It was a pleasure to see the large number of attendees at this first ever TTCN-3 user conference in India. This conference brought out the depth of knowledge that Indian practitioners possess in the TTCN3 domain and key challenges being faced by them in implementations. This conference also helped in augmenting the understanding of TTCN-3 language and its applicability in a variety of domains like Finance, E&U etc. Wipro has been working in TTCN-2 since past 8 years and is very much committed towards the success of TTCN-3. We have plans to implement TTCN-3 in non –telecom domains like Retail, Banking & Securities. Wipro is keenly partnering with ETSI in evangelizing and promoting TTCN-3 for the benefit of the Software Testing Industry."

ETSI organizes the TTCN-3 User Conference as an annual event in locations throughout the world. The next TTCN-3 User Conference will be held in Beijing, China, from 8 to 10 June 2010.

About TTCN-3
TTCN-3 is an internationally standardized testing language, formally known as Testing and Test Control Notation Version 3.  TTCN-3 is different from conventional programming or scripting languages as it has been specifically designed for testing. The language is not restricted to conformance testing and can be used for many other kinds of testing including interoperability, robustness, regression, system and integration testing. Off-the-shelf tools and test systems based on the language are readily available from a variety of vendors.
TTCN-3 is a product of ETSI's Technical Committee MTS (Methods for Testing and Specification) and is constantly developed and maintained at ETSI by a team of leading testing experts from industry, research institutes and academia.
