ETSI Headquarters, Sophia Antipolis, France – 17 April 2012

ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) and the IPSO Alliance are proud to announce the successful completion of the first Internet of Things (IoT) Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) PlugtestsTM interoperability event.

This event, organized in co-operation the Probe-IT project, was held in Paris, France on 24-25 March 2012 and was co-located with IETF 83.

CoAP is a lightweight application-protocol for wireless sensors that have limited computing power, memory and radio transmission range. The CoAP protocol, developed by the IETF, provides an efficient way to transfer sensor data such as humidity, temperature, location etc. which can then be translated easily into HTTP. This will allow the integration of sensor data into web-based services and from this, the creation of a true Internet of Things. The CoAP protocol has been selected by ETSI to be part of the ETSI M2M architecture.

This Plugtests event tested features including the base CoAP specification, CoAP Block Transfer, CoAP Observation and the the CoRE Link Format. The test cases were jointly developed by IRISA/Université de Rennes 1 (France), BUPT (China) and ETSI.

This important event allowed vendors to evaluate the interoperability of their products and to verify their understanding of the specifications. It also provided useful feedback to enhance ongoing ETSI and IETF standardization. This event was attended by 18 companies testing the world's first CoAP client and server implementations from China, EU, Japan and Korea.

ETSI, IPSO Alliance and their partners are committed to drive testing support for IoT industrial deployments in domains such as ETSI M2M, IETF CoRE and 6LoWPAN, to achieve interoperable products.

Geoff Mulligan, Chair of the IPSO Alliance said: 'We are excited for this opportunity to test the fundamental components of this new IoT protocol and are looking forward to further work with ETSI on ensuring the Interoperability of M2M protocols, devices and applications.'

Peter Friess, Project Officer of the European Commission said: 'We are pleased to see the success of this first CoAP Plugtests, with the support of the Probe-It project to improve the global interoperability in the Internet of Things.'

About ETSI
ETSI produces globally-applicable standards for Information and Communications Technologies (ICT), including fixed, mobile, radio, converged, aeronautical, broadcast and internet technologies and is officially recognized by the European Union as a European Standards Organization. ETSI is an independent, not-for-profit association whose more than 700 member companies and organizations, drawn from 62 countries across 5 continents worldwide, determine its work programme and participate directly in its work.

ETSI Plugtests are interoperability test events that cover a wide range of telecommunications, Internet, broadcasting and multimedia converging standards. For more information, please visit: www.etsi.org/plugtests

PLUGTESTS™ and the ETSI logo are Trade Marks of ETSI registered for the benefit of its Members.

ipsoAbout the IPSO Alliance
The IPSO Alliance is the primary advocate for IP for smart objects for use in energy, consumer, healthcare and industrial applications. The Alliance, a non-profit organization whose members include leading technology, communications and energy companies, is providing the foundation for a network that will allow any sensor-enabled physical object to communicate to another as individuals do over the Internet. The IPSO Alliance membership is open to any organization supporting an IP-based approach to connecting smart objects. For more information, visit http://www.ipso-alliance.org/.

About the PROBE-IT project
PROBE-IT is a research project part funded by the European Commission under the seventh Framework Programme for research funding. The project addresses three different areas:

  • benchmarking of IoT deployments to provide stakeholders with decision tools aimed at identifying the best options when deploying or using IoT;
  • guidelines for stakeholders to plan IoT roll-out;
  • testing roadmap and solutions to provide stakeholders with elements to validate technology conformance and interoperability.
