ETSI Headquarters, Sophia Antipolis, France – 7 December 2011

14 vendors demonstrated the interoperability of their ETSI standards-based ITS Cooperative Mobility Systems at the first joint ETSI and ERTICO ITS PlugtestsTM event from 14th to 18th of November 2011, at the High Tech Automotive Campus of Helmond, in the Netherlands.

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) must be interoperable. This was the message delivered by the ITS community gathered on the High Tech Automotive Campus of Helmond (NL) for at ITS Interoperability Week from 14th to 18th of November 2011. ETSI and ERTICO jointly organized the first ITS Cooperative Mobility Systems PlugtestsTM, verifying the interoperability of ETSI standards-based ITS systems. Supported by the European Commission-funded research projects DRIVE C2X and eCoMove, and hosted by TNO and the Dutch Integrated Testsite Cooperative Mobility (DITCM), the Plugtests event allowed 14 ITS vendors to test the interoperability of their solutions in face-to-face configurations.

The results of the test event were presented at a Workshop on Cooperative Mobility Services Interoperability Testing organized by ERTICO, ETSI and TNO on the 17th of November. Over 50 delegates from suppliers, research institutes, car manufacturers and associations heard how ITS systems will be safety-critical, as well as brand-critical, and how important interoperability is for the successful deployment of cooperative ITS.

ETSI has developed an integrated set of Intelligent Transport System standards in its Technical Committee TC ITS. Together these provide for a secure, robust solution for vehicle to roadside and vehicle to vehicle communications, for safety-critical and traffic efficiency applications. ETSI Plugtests events such as this one demonstrate interoperability, provide feedback on improvements to the standards committee, and develop confidence in the technology under test.

Gérard Segarra, Innovation leader at Renault Engineering Division, commented: "As car manufacturers, we purchase products from technology suppliers, but before we purchase products, we want to be sure that they are interoperable and conformant."
