ETSI publishes mobile Satellite Digital Radio Standard

Sophia Antipolis,  22nd February 2007

The ETSI Technical Committee Satellite Earth Stations and Systems (TC SES) has developed a set of standards for the physical layer of Satellite Digital Radio (SDR) networks that will improve efficiency and encourage interoperability in the transmission of video, audio and data content directly to mobile receivers.

Dr. Jens Krause, SES ASTRA, Chair of the Working Group on SDR, commented:

'Although proprietary satellite digital radio systems are in operation today, the ETSI standard will ensure that future systems for mobile audio radio and mobile TV have a standardized radio interface available. This will provide a powerful enabler for a mass-market for [mobile] broadcast receivers, giving consumers freedom of choice and - very importantly - meeting all of the regulatory requirements.'

The standards are now freely available from the ETSI download area: http://pda.etsi.org/pda.
