Open Source MANO, the largest open source MANO initiative, showcases momentum with new members Atos, CableLabs and Verizon, and Mobile World Congress demonstrations

ETSI’s Open Source MANO today welcomes its newest members, with Atos, CableLabs and Verizon joining the group making a total of 60 organizations working together to shape NFV networks in the largest open source MANO initiative.

The OSM community is focused on delivering a production-quality open source MANO stack that meets the requirements of commercial NFV networks. Announced at last year’s Mobile World Congress, just one year ago, OSM has seen remarkable success and quick progression. It has grown from eight founding members to a total of 60 organizations, including 8 network operators (Bell Mobility, BT, PT Portugal Telecom, SK Telecom, Sprint, Telefonica, Telenor and Verizon).

OSM issued its first code package, Release Zero, a month ahead of schedule in May 2016. This was followed by a full Release ONE code package in October. OSM took part in the recent ETSI NFV Plugtests event, which brought together over 40 commercial and open source NFV implementations for interoperability testing, demonstrating that OSM has been architected with a strong focus on immediate usability and large scale interoperability with VNF providers and VIMs.

Only one year ago, OSM started its journey with a handful of pioneers. Now it has quickly become the largest and most diverse community in the MANO space, with 60 members, including service providers, system integrators and VNF vendors from all over the world, and is heading now towards its third release, says Francisco Javier Ramon Salguero, chairman of ETSI OSM. The creation of a sense of community since the beginning and the focus on clear and achievable objectives have been key to success. Undoubtedly, we are really keen to preserve these values which have worked that well for us.

OSM is present at this year’s Mobile World Congress (27 February – 2 March, Barcelona, Spain). OSM Proofs of Concept will take place on three different stands:

  • DevOps in Service Chains and 5G Network Slices
    On the RIFT.io stand, Hall 6 Stand 6J8. Involving Telenor, Arctos Labs, Intel, Netrounds and RIFT.io
  • RADCOM MaveriQ portfolio running on Open Source MANO
    On the Radcom stand, Hall 2 Stand 2D60
  • Network Services with Integrated VNF Verification
    On the Canonical stand, Hall 3 Stand 3K31. Involving Ixia, Canonical, DataArt Solutions, and Sonus.

The OSM community is closely aligned with the evolution of ETSI NFV and will provide a regularly updated reference implementation of NFV MANO. OSM aims at enabling an eco-system of NFV solution vendors to rapidly and cost-effectively deliver solutions to their users. ETSI OSM complements the work of ETSI NFV and vice versa. The approach of having an open source project closely aligned with a specification group maximizes innovation, efficiency and time to market and ensures a continuing series of true (conformant) reference implementations.
