ETSI M2M community and DG Connect organized a workshop on 27-28 May 2014 in Brussels.

In the future, domestic or industrial energy using and producing products, also called appliances, will not be stand-alone systems anymore. They will be highly intelligent, networked and smart devices, which form complete energy consuming, producing, and managing systems. One of the requirements for making such systems commercially successful and widely adopted, is that they can be extended over time according to the needs and budget of the user. Such systems will therefore consist of devices from different vendors added at different points in time, with open interfaces enabling further extension. These systems will also need to be able to communicate with service platforms from different energy service providers. ETSI’s proposed standard will take account of these requirements and will ensure interoperability through the integration with ETSI’s M2M architecture.

In coordination with this initiative, the European Commission has launched a “Study on the available semantics assets for the interoperability of Smart Appliances; Mapping into a common ontology as a M2M application layer semantics” (SMART 2013/0077), which will provide input to the ETSI work.

Introduction

This DG CONNECT & ETSI Workshop on Smart M2M Appliances will deal with a new generation of smart appliances, with active behaviour at energy efficiency management, conformant to a “plug and play” interoperability capacity, and a clear mandate to start with a high-level (semantic) modelling of information to be exchanged.

The event brought together stakeholders and experts from various environments who discussed Smart Cities and sustainability, Energy Efficient buildings, BIM (Building Information Modelling) and BEMS (Building Energy Management Systems) interoperability with appliances, Internet of Things or smart grids.

Scope

  • To report about the First Interim study launched by the European Commission that covers the stocktaking of existing semantic assets and use case assets, including a description of each asset found and a semantic map that shows the semantic overlaps and differences between the assets. This report also identified which existing models are in the core of the smart appliances domain and explained the next steps and how to participate in the open consultation.
  • To inform about ETSI M2M horizontal platform strategy, the M2M architecture and semantic and interworking specification work of ETSI/oneM2M partnership project as well as approaches to testing and certification. It introduced the communication Framework and get feedback from the Smart Appliances Stakeholders during a round table discussion.
