Galileo

Introduction

The Galileo European Satellite Navigation System is an initiative launched by the European Union and the European Space Agency to provide an independent worldwide satellite navigation system. It is conceived as being both a competitor and a complement to the existing American Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) service and to other Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) like the Russian Glonass.

The Galileo programme places high dependence on standardization in order to assure good market penetration and to promote the system to end users.

Our Role & Activities

  • Conformity to the pdfRTTE Directive (refer to Radio Equipment Directive) for transmitting ground earth stations
  • Protection of Galileo frequencies
  • Development of generic mass market receiver/interface standards
  • Standards for Open Access, Safety of Life and, possibly, other services.
  • Improvements to location-based services made possible by the availability of the Galileo satellite specifications will enable an Advanced Global Navigation Satellite System (A-GNSS) in systems based on both the GSM/EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) and the UMTSTM Radio Access Network (UTRAN).
