1st IMS Interoperability Event

ETSI, as one of the partners of the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), has played a key role in the development of IMS.
The importance of IMS to ETSI can further be seen in ETSI TISPAN's choice to place 3GPP IMS at the heart of their Next Generation Network (NGN) standards.

The purpose of this event has been:

  • To enable participants to assess the level of interoperability of IMS implementations and IMS-based applications.
  • To improve the quality of 3GPP IMS specifications, by detecting any interoperability issues.
  • To ease the introduction of IMS systems, by providing the means to solve interoperability problems before widespread deployment.

The event has been open for participation for both IMS equipment vendors and operators, as well as ETSI members and non-members.

The event has evaluated IMS core network interoperability by focusing on early services which will require IMS support, in particular basic call services. The test descriptions which have been the basis of the event were DTSTISPAN_06027_2_NGN. Using IMS soft clients and an interworking network configuration, participants have evaluated interoperability on the interfaces which are used to connect IMS networks together.

This event was attended by 49 participants from IMS vendors ranging from large telecomuniction companies to smaller IMS component vendors as well as operators. During the event over 482 tests have been executed and 94 % interoperability has been observed.
