Starting New Activities

Suggestions for new standardization activities at ETSI may come various sources, such as:

  • ETSI Board, as Strategic Technical Topics
  • Direct request for assistance from ETSI members to bring an activity into ETSI
  • Contacts with external groups
  • ETSI staff contacts from prospection activities

The ETSI-SNI team (Strategy & New Initiatives team) is especially designed for new activities within new technologies, which require standardization or pre-standardization: SNI engages with research projects by attending scientific conferences and events at which project results are presented.

SNI maintains contacts established at the most relevant European Technology Platforms and Joint Technology Initiatives (eMobility, NEM, NESSI, ARTEMIS, ISI, EPoSS, etc.) to continue a dialogue with project co-ordinators and research directors.

SNI also works with European Commission staff and participates in the project cluster and concertation activities for FP6 and FP7 projects. The Eureka programme especially its CELTIC (telecoms) and ITEA2 (software & systems) clusters of projects are also among the activities permanently monitored by SNI.

SNI explains to those projects the ETSI standards process and the ETSI philosophy of direct participation and direct contribution. This allows R&D projects to kick-off early standardization or even pre-standardization activities in a recognized, global standards environment, while still keeping direct control of any of these standardization activities related to their project.

The purpose of such early standards work is to gain additional time-to-market advantages, by running standardization and R&D in parallel: Thus both activities can influence each other and results from one activity can immediately be taken into account by the other. This helps to save both time in the creation process, and investment in technology development, which culd be made obsolete by competing standardization activities.
