Guidance for R&D Projects

Standardization is key to achieving market success for new technologies in the ICT field. Innovation and new technologies result from Research and Development activities.

Ensuring a good interface between standardization and Research and Development is essential for their efficient cross-fertilization. However the ICT standardization landscape involves hundred of organizations and it may be difficult for R&D projects to find the right organization. The COPRAS project that was active in 2004-2007 is a good example of the ETSI contribution to this challenge.

The Cooperation Platform for Research and Standards (COPRAS) was initiated as an horizontal activity by ETSI and CEN, CENELEC, together with W3C and the Open Group in the context of the (EC funded) Information Society Technologies (IST) R&D programme. COPRAS contacted R&D projects established under the IST programme managed by the EC, to identify those expected to benefit most from interfacing with standardization, and developed standardization action plans with them.
COPRAS also developed guidelines to help researchers finding their way in the standardization landscape.
