Protecting the environment is a global concern, and one which involves whole industries, as well as individuals. Reducing energy consumption and using energy more efficiently will provide obvious environmental benefits, but it also makes good business sense.
ETSI has been at the forefront of developing standards aimed at improving energy efficiency in ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) networks, equipment and services. ETSI activities cover methods of measuring energy efficiency, environmental and infrastructural aspects for telecommunication equipment and its environment, power supply interface requirements and grounding for ICT equipment, alternative power sources in telecommunication installations, best practices to reduce energy consumption, and standards for life cycle analysis of environmental impact.
An ETSI Workshop on Energy Efficiency will take place on 20-21 June 2012, in Genoa, Italy, hosted by the University of Genoa and supported by ECONET project.
The workshop will emphasize the design and the use of ICT to reduce environmental impact. In addition the workshop will enable delegates to:
- Share views on ongoing work on energy efficiency standards in ETSI and among other SDOs and research projects;
- Identify any potential gaps and overlaps in energy efficiency standardization ;
- Analyze future requirements for energy efficiency standardization of ICT equipment and networks.
The subject of Energy Efficiency will be developed in the following sessions:
- Setting the scene
- Current standardization initiatives
- Energy Efficiency - measurements and KPIs
- Technical solutions related to energy efficient cooling and power supply in telecommunications
- Assessment of environmental impact and efficiency: life cycle assessment
- Research projects
- Future perspectives
Numerous projects will be presented in poster sessions during the networking breaks.
